  • If DTC P2084 and/or P242B is stored, the following symptoms may appear:

    • White smoke

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

The ECM compares the values from exhaust temperature sensors B1S2 and B1S3 with the engine coolant temperature when the ignition switch is turned to ON after the vehicle has been left soaking for 10 hours or more. If the difference is 400°C (720°F) or higher, a DTC indicating an exhaust gas temperature sensor malfunction is stored and the MIL is illuminated (2 trip detection logic).

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

DTC No. DTC Detection Drive Pattern
P2084 Stop the engine, leave the vehicle as is for 1 to 2 hours and confirm that "Exhaust Temperature B1S2" is approximately the same value as "Intake Air".
P242B Stop the engine, leave the vehicle as is for 1 to 2 hours and confirm that "Exhaust Temperature B1S3" is approximately the same value as "Intake Air".

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

Note:

After replacing the ECM, the new ECM needs registration (Click here) and initialization (Click hereНажмите здесь).

Tip:
  • Read freeze frame data using the GTS. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

  • Sensor 2 represents the sensor located upstream of the DPF catalytic converter.

  • Sensor 3 represents the sensor located downstream of the DPF catalytic converter.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P2084 AND P242B)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.

    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

    4. Read the DTCs.

Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Trouble Codes

      ResultProceed to
      DTC P2084 and/or P242B is outputA
DTC P2084 and/or P242B and other DTCs are outputB
      Tip:

If any DTCs other than DTC P2084 or P242B are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

  2. READ VALUE USING GTS (EXHAUST TEMPERATURE B1S2 AND B1S3)

    1. Leave the vehicle as is for 1 to 2 hours with the engine stopped.

    2. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    3. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Exhaust Temperature B1S2 and Exhaust Temperature B1S3.

Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Data List
      Tester Display
      Exhaust Temperature B1S2
      Exhaust Temperature B1S3
    5. Read the values.

Value of "Exhaust Temperature B1S2" is 400°C (752°F) or higher A
Value of "Exhaust Temperature B1S3" is 400°C (752°F) or higher B
      Except above C
      Tip:

If the exhaust gas temperature sensor is normal, the exhaust gas temperature drops when the vehicle is left as is for 1 to 2 hours with the engine stopped. If the exhaust gas temperature does not drop, the exhaust gas temperature sensor may be malfunctioning.

  5. READ VALUE USING GTS (ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE)

    1. Allow the engine to soak for 1 to 2 hours.

      Tip:
      • It is not necessary to allow the engine to soak if the engine is cold.

      • The engine cools faster if the hood is opened.

    2. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    3. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Coolant Temp.

Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Data List
      Tester Display
      Coolant Temp
    5. Read the value.

      OK
The difference between the displayed value and ambient temperature is below 5°C (9°F).
      Note:

If the difference between "Coolant Temp" and the ambient temperature is 5°C (9°F) or higher, the heat from the engine affects the intake air temperature sensor, causing an incorrect value to be displayed. In this case, allow the engine to soak again.
