DESCRIPTION

DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is an emission control system which processes the particulate matter (PM) that is emitted from a diesel engine. The DPF catalyst has a porous ceramic structure which has a PM collecting function. The PM that is collected is continuously treated by oxidation due to catalytic action at high temperatures, however PM accumulation increases at low catalyst temperatures because the oxidation process slows down. The ECM performs PM forced regeneration so that the amount of accumulated PM does not exceed the threshold.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

The ECM monitors the differential pressure between the upstream and downstream of the DPF catalyst and also monitors exhaust gas temperature to detect a malfunction in the DPF catalyst.

  • Excessive PM accumulation:

The ECM monitors the PM accumulation ratio and when the accumulated PM volume in the DPF catalyst exceeds the limit, the ECM illuminates the MIL.

  • Abnormal catalyst temperature increase:

The ECM monitors exhaust gas temperature increase while the exhaust fuel addition injector assembly adds fuel during PM forced regeneration. Exhaust gas temperature increases up to approximately 300 to 500°C (572 to 932°F) during PM forced regeneration. If the temperature does not increase even after a certain amount of time has elapsed, the ECM determines that the DPF catalyst is abnormal and illuminates the MIL.

  • Catalytic converter differential pressure too low:

When PM forced regeneration is manually performed, PM forced generation does not finish even after 60 minutes or more elapse, the ECM determines that there is problem with the DPF catalyst and illuminates the MIL.

Tip:
  • If DTC P244A, P244B, P244C or P2463 is stored, fail-safe controls engine power output and PM forced regeneration is prohibited. In this case, PM forced regeneration can be performed after disconnecting the EFI-MAIN fuse or battery terminal and waiting for 60 seconds or more before connecting it again.

  • Read freeze frame data using the GTS. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. READ DTC OUTPUT (RECORD STORED DTC AND FREEZE FRAME DATA)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

    5. Record the stored DTC and freeze frame data.

Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Trouble Codes
    6. Check Exhaust Fuel Addition FB and Catalyst Differential Press in the freeze frame data.

      Tip:
      • When the Exhaust Fuel Addition FB value is 1.45 or more, it indicates a high possibility of insufficient temperature increase during PM regeneration control.

      • When the Catalyst Differential Press value is more than 0.47, it indicates a high possibility that DPF catalyst is clogged.

  5. REPLACE EXHAUST MANIFOLD CONVERTER SUB-ASSEMBLY

    1. Even though it has been determined that the exhaust manifold converter sub-assembly (DPF catalytic converter) needs to be replaced, make sure to perform all diagnostic procedures for DTC P244A, P244C and P2463 before replacing it.

      Tip:

This DTC is stored because an excessive amount of PM has accumulated and resulted in abnormal combustion. It is necessary to diagnose the cause of abnormal PM accumulation and repair the problem. Therefore, do not perform replacement at this time.

  6. CHECK FOR WHITE SMOKE (DURING PM FORCED REGENERATION)

    1. Clear the DTC and Exhaust Fuel Addition FB value by disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal or removing the EFI-MAIN fuse for 60 seconds or more.

      Tip:
      • The accumulated PM volume stored in the ECM cannot be initialized using the GTS.

      • To perform PM forced regeneration, it is necessary to perform initialization of the accumulated PM volume stored in the ECM.

    2. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    3. Start the engine and drive the vehicle until the engine coolant temperature reaches 60°C (140°F) or higher.

      Note:

If PM forced regeneration stops, repair the malfunction that caused it to stop, and perform it again to complete the operation.

      Tip:
      • While the "Activate the DPF Rejuvenate (PM)" Active Test is being performed, the accelerator opening angle should be kept as constant as possible.

      • PM forced regeneration completes in 15 to 40 minutes.

      • PM forced regeneration time changes depending on PM Accumulation Ratio and driving conditions.

      • A fail-safe stops PM forced regeneration if Catalyst Differential Press increases too much during regeneration.

    8. Check if the temperature increases or abnormal white smoke occurs during PM forced regeneration.

      Result
      Result Proceed to
No abnormal white smoke occurs but the temperature of Exhaust Temperature B1S3 does not reach 450°C (842°F) or higher during PM forced regeneration A
Abnormal white smoke occurs and the temperature of Exhaust Temperature B1S3 reaches 300°C (572°F) or higher during PM forced regeneration B
      Except above* C
      Tip:
      • When excessive white smoke occurs only during PM forced regeneration, uncombusted fuel passes through due to the deterioration of DPF catalyst is suspected.

      • When combustion control has a malfunction, deterioration or abnormality of driving performance can be felt despite PM forced regeneration.

      • If Exhaust Temperature B1S3 does not reach 450°C (842°F) or higher, the exhaust fuel addition injector assembly may be clogged.

      • *: Excessive accumulation of PM is caused by a worsening in combustion conditions and an increase in black smoke due to a malfunction in the control system.
